'Death games' are some of the most beloved premises in anime, as it throws all the artifice away and just portrays life as this literal game for survival, allowing for some surprisingly deep, existential dialogues if not, at least, some pretty gruesome sequences. Anytime I hear about a horror game like Death Trips I am always interested. I was actually told about this one thanks to a popular YouTube channel I like to watch so I thought I would check it out for myself. This is a low budget indie game which as far as I know was made by one or just a couple of people. If you have an interest in first person horror games and like “jump scares”, this could be the game for you.

The Killer Inside!

The story that is running in Death Trips is one that really did grab my attention. I am not saying that this is a game with a lot of story or cinematics like an Evil Within or Resident Evil VII. However, the premise got me invested and my imagination was kind of running wild with what was going on.

Death Trips Gameplay

You play the role of an inspector who is on the trail of an evil serial killer called, Lady Death! She took her latest victim in this really lame and cheesy hotel and you are there to investigate…. But she is still there! So, as well as trying to solve the case, you need to get the heck out of there or you are next.

How To Survive?

Let me start by saying that this is a short game and I mean, really, really short. You start by exploring the hotel lobby and you eventually make your way into a hallway. This is where the horror in the game lays as the lights flicker and you see Lady Death at the end of the hall. This is terrifying, but even more, nerve-wracking is when she starts running at you!

I am not going to spoil what happens next as it is awesome. However, the way that the game goes from making you scared to making you confused to making you laugh is just flat out fantastic. I have a feeling that some will find this just stupid, but I thought it was done very well. The presentation is very basic, but that is something I think they decided to do intentionally in all honesty with you.

I will say that what we have here with Death Trips is a game that for those that get it will be something they have a lot of fun with. On the flips side of this, there will be many people who think it is just dumb and wonder what the heck the point of this is. I for one think that this is quite clever and as it takes up next to none of your time, I highly recommend that you check it out. Oh, and do not spoil what happens when you have your showdown with Lady Death as it is an experience you want to have without knowing the outcome.
