Part 1. What is FairPlay DRM

FairPlay is the Apple DRM and was initially used only in the iTunes store to protect AAC encoded audio files but got soon also adopted for Apple’s video products that are now part of the iTunes store.


Most of the controversy surrounding FairPlay is about Apple's refusal to license it, but not about the limitations it imposed - as far as DRM schemes go, FairPlay wasn't overly restrictive. However, since Apple doesn't license FairPlay to anyone, you can only play a protected file using the iTunes software or Apple's built-in apps. Also, the file can only be recognized and playable on an iPod, iPhone, or iPad, and devices that are authorized.


FairPlay limits you to:

• authorize up to five different computers to play FairPlay-protected files via iTunes or Apple's native app.

• burn a particular playlist containing a protected song up to seven times.

But FairPlay allows you to:

• burn a protected song to CD as many times as you want.

3. FairPlay DRM Removal for iBooks

Requiem is a well-known software that allowed everybody to circumvent FairPlay DRM on iBooks. However, Requiem 4.1 is the latest version to remove DRM from iTunes (Music & Videos) and it can even work on the content that has HD quality of 1080p. But, Requiem 3.3.6 is the only tool to remove DRM from iBooks (Apple e-Books). Also, please note that:

• Requiem isn't compatible with iTunes 11 and higher versions because Apple has patched it.

• To remove the DRM from iBooks, you need the combination of Requiem (Version 3.3.6) and to install iTunes (Version 10.5.3).

• If you are a Windows user, install a 32-bit Java environment at first regardless of your system being 64-bit.

What eBook reading enhancements will be made available in October 2017 – March 2018 timeframe? And how will customers be alerted when updated files are available?

  • With this release, citations and navigation will be available at the beginning of each section of the book. From the navigation you will be able to click links to more easily navigate throughout the title. And the printing enhancement will allow you to easily print by section.
  • Customers will receive email alerts when enhanced eBook files are made available in their download center. Downloading is not required but is necessary if you would like to use the new features.

Does the eBook link out to Lexis® for cases, citations, etc.?

  • Yes. LexisNexis eBooks carry dynamic links to cases and citations, identifiable in green font. Use your active Lexis User ID and password to use the links with an online connection.

Do eBooks “expire” or “time out”?

  • Your eBook will not expire. It is yours to keep and remains active. You can access your Download Center as many times as you would like to read your eBook via Read Now, powered by OverDrive Read. If the content is updated, you may receive an email notification from LexisNexis with an invitation to purchase the new edition. No Internet access is necessary to read downloaded files. However, Read Now requires an online connection and Lexis links require online access and a subscription.

Can I access my LexisNexis eBook from the Web?

  • Yes, after you purchase a LexisNexis eBook, you can retrieve it from your Download Center.
  • The Read feature requires an online connection. In-browser reading requires Internet Explorer® 11 or higher, Chrome™ or Firefox®.
  • If you choose to download to your e-reader, no Internet access is necessary to read an eBook; digital eBooks from LexisNexis are not Web based. However, using Lexis links will require Web access and a subscription.

Do I have to pay shipping, handling or taxes on LexisNexis eBooks?

  • When you purchase a LexisNexis eBook, there are no shipping and handling charges. Sales tax will be based on your credit card billing address.

Can I return an eBook purchase?

  • Unfortunately, LexisNexis eBooks are not returnable.

How do I download my eBook from LexisNexis?
Regardless of what device you will use to read your eBook, we recommend you download it first to your computer and then upload it to your device. If you are a student, download the file to the device you use most often for school.

  1. You will receive an email from LexisNexis with a user ID and password to activate your Account Profile on the Store and Download Center. If you have previously registered on the Store under your current email address, your existing user ID and password are your Account Profile credentials.
  2. Click on the link in the email to go to the Store. Enter your user ID and password and activate your Account Profile by a simple security question. Upon activating, you will be taken to the My Account Options and the View My Downloads tab on your Account Profile. Your downloadable files will be listed in this section.
  3. Files are labeled as New, Updated, or Expired to help you clearly identify and track your purchases.
  4. The eBook files will be listed for each title you ordered. Select the files you want to download by clicking the download icon. Locate the item you wish to download and click on the title or the download icon to begin your download. Read any additional instructions that might be displayed and then confirm the download action by clicking the download button. Your download will then begin.
  5. Downloading digital content takes advantage of the download management capabilities that exist within your Internet browser. Follow the instructions that may be specific to that browser. To read an eBook directly in the e-reader of choice always select Open. Once you have successfully opened or downloaded your purchase, close any windows and either repeat the process for other items or sign out of your account.
  6. If reading the LexisNexis eBook on a device such as an Apple® iPad®, Amazon® Kindle or Barnes & Noble® NOOK®, you will need to sync your device to your desktop to access the eBook files. If reading on the desktop, launch your e-reader and navigate to the eBook files to add them to your virtual bookshelf.

How many times can I download my LexisNexis eBook?

  • Once you’ve downloaded your LexisNexis eBook, you can gain access to it as many times as you’d like on your e-reader. Your license to download an eBook from the LexisNexis Download Center, however, covers a fixed number of downloads per title and quantity purchased.

Can I share my LexisNexis eBook?

  • LexisNexis eBooks are only licensed for use to one individual and cannot be shared. The Terms of Use for a LexisNexis eBook can be found at the front of your eBook.

I have placed an eBook order for several people. How can I get each eBook to the correct person?

  • After you have placed the order, the purchased title will appear in your Downloads section under My Profile. Next to the title, you will see an Assign button. Click this button and enter the email address(es) of the people to whom you want to assign the purchased titles.
  • For bulk orders, the buyer can upload a list of email addresses via .csv file. Any subsequent updates for the titles will be automatically sent to the person to whom you have assigned the title. Multi-volume sets can only be assigned as sets and not as individual volumes. Certain titles may be restricted from being assigned. Can I print and copy my LexisNexis eBook?

  • When using Read Now in your web browser, you can easily print a section of the eBook. eBooks in Adobe format enable copying or printing. In addition, eBooks have security settings (DRM) that may prevent printing and copying of some titles. These restrictions vary from book to book. You can view the security settings for each title by clicking the Buy eBook link on the eBook Details page.

What are the copy and print restrictions on LexisNexis eBooks?

  • Restrictions have been set to prevent unauthorized reproduction of books. These restrictions limit the number of pages you can copy and print from a book. Each eBook’s permissions on the LexisNexis Store website are viewable after you place an eBook in your cart. You will see a note if the product is digitally protected. Click the link for details on copy/paste and/or print restrictions.
  • Printing is tracked in whole pages, regardless of whether you select a paragraph or the whole page of text. You may not send more than 10 pages at a time to the printer. Copying is tracked in “copy instances.” A copy instance is worth a certain number of pages, depending on the total page count of the eBook. You receive a fixed allotment for print and copy when you first download your book.

I missed downloading a couple updates to my subscription. How can I access these previous editions?

  • Your previous editions are safe in your Download Center. You can access and download previous editions any time by clicking on the Download previous editions button below the file name in the Download Center.

What does DRM mean, and how will it affect my LexisNexis eBook ownership?

  • You may see Digital Rights Management (DRM) in your LexisNexis eBook Terms of Use, located in the front of your eBook. DRM places the purchaser’s account name and email address in the eBook file. This system ensures that a specific copy of a LexisNexis eBook is licensed to one individual and that individual alone uses it. In this way, copyright laws are respected and authors and publishers are compensated fairly.
  • Some LexisNexis eBooks (i.e. law school specific or some large treatise sets) require an active Adobe account id and an Adobe compatible e-reader.
  • You also may access the Electronic Publications Master Agreement for additional information related to eBooks, PDFs and other offline publications distributed electronically by LexisNexis.

Why do I need to authorize my computer with my Adobe ID?

  • When finished, use your computer’s undock or eject feature to remove your Kindle.
