The classic road-crossing game gets an epic overhaul in Frogger’s Adventures: The Rescue. A new take on a retro legend, Frogger returns better than ever, retaining much of the simplicity that made it a classic with updates fit for a new generation of players. Visually pleasing and challenging enough for most players, this is one of those titles that are always worth a playthrough.
Despite its many strengths, there are still some small inconveniences here and there that can become an annoyance for some players. In this review, we’ll take a look at what made this game so great and whether you should give it a chance or leap out of its way.
Swamp shenanigans
In case you’re not familiar with the original Frogger, suffice to say that it’s one of the simpler and most addictive games of the 8-Bit era. In that game, you control a frog that has to cross a street, avoiding some dangers as cars and logs to make your way through.
The basic concept of leaping to progress through stages remains intact in Frogger’s Adventures: The Rescue. However, a simple game of crossing the road just wouldn’t fly in the early days of PS2. That’s why this game includes a Story Mode, one where players take control of Frogger the frog.
The story is nothing to write home about, but that’s not really an issue in this case. The diverse levels and charming character designs can make the game’s simple plot feel just like a Saturday morning cartoon.
Visual variety
One area where Frogger’s Adventures: The Rescue excels is in just how colorful its many environments look. To complete that cartoonish look we’ve mentioned before, the game uses many colorful textures and intricate maps to add an extra layer of fun to the whole experience.
There are some minor puzzle elements scattered throughout the levels. Seeing as this is a game aimed at younger audiences, it’s no surprise that these puzzles are pretty basic. That said, the puzzles never feel too easy or exceedingly hard, achieving a nice balance in their difficulty.
There’s something worth mentioning, though, and it might just be one of the game’s weakest aspects: its controls. Sluggish would be the better word for it, as most of the inputs seem to be ignored by Frogger.
In a game where calculating your every jump is crucial, having unresponsive controls can make all the difference. Thankfully, this happens very rarely, and most of the time you’ll be able to enjoy the Frogger fun without much difficulty.
Multiplayer fun
Besides the Story Mode, there’s also a Multiplayer Mode. This mode lets up to four players join in on the fun, with nine different mini-games to choose from. These mini-games are reminiscent of the ones seen in games like Crash bash and offer excellent fun with a group of friends
As a bonus, players can choose from a variety of characters that they’ve unlocked through the Story Mode. This adds some incentive to finish the game’s story, even if your main interest lies in the multiplayer mode.
Frogger’s Adventures: The Rescue is a great evolution of the classic Frogger formula. Its charming levels and entertaining puzzles are great for younger players, and the fun multiplayer will keep the party going long after you’re done with the game’s story. Definitely a must-try for fans of the classic 8-Bit Frogger, and for those looking for a game that’s fun and not too challenging for young players.
Pros:
- Charming visuals and character designs
- Simple yet entertaining plot
- Fun multiplayer
Cons:
- Sluggish controls
- Puzzles could’ve been a bit more challenging
Frogger Adventures The Rescue
Froggers action game!
Frogger Adventures The Rescue Gamecube Iso
You will remember Frogger as the cute but unlucky protagonist in the puzzler series that saw his trying to get across the street, but always managed to get some vehicle, well, squash him, hehe! But at any rate, the Konami developers remembered him and were of the opinion that the unlucky frog needs a second chance, giving him free reign to roam free in his own action adventure game! The game here is a top down 3D kind of deal, action game. You can use Frogger's tongue to, well, shoot down enemies and you will be up against all sort of natural environmental obstacles that require him to jump and to manage his comings and goings properly. The game remembers Frogger's origins and at times it will offer you action sequences that are a nice recreation of original Frogger gameplay, but don't worry, there is a lot of varity here. Overall, children and young at heart people will find this game here delightful. So give it a go, it deserves it. And while you are at it, you might also want to check out 3D Frog Frenzy, a game that is even bolder in allowing you to control another frog protagonist!
